The Masterpiece

The sunset sky, shining with an array of hues

Silently declares your creativity

And I wonder if you crafted me

From such a vast palette of colours.

Right now I feel only grey and drab.

Then I remember I am your “poiema”, your masterpiece

Of which you are the most proud.

Forgive me for not reflecting your glory, like that still sky

For repressing my creative radiance

For feeling unworthy

When I am shaped in your very own image.

I don’t make a habit of quoting Greek bible words; I leave that up to theologians. But this one word captures my imagination—poiema. It means ‘masterpiece’ or ‘workmanship,’ and you don’t need to be a scholar to see that it is the root of the English word ‘poem’.

Now here’s the truly amazing thing. Paul uses this word in Ephesians 2:10 to tell Christians that they are God’s workmanship, His work of art: “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so that we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” (Ephesians 2:10 NLT)

Incredible! It may be different for you, but I certainly haven’t gone through life believing that I’m a priceless art-work. Yet here it is in God’s Word. I, Joan, am His masterpiece. You, …………….., are His masterpiece.

Let this one statement —like a small seed—sink down and take root in your mind and heart.

I am God’s poiema.

His workmanship.

A masterpiece.

And then give the Master Craftsman the freedom and time to continue His wonderful creative work in you, to shape you into everything He intends so that you will be able to do the good things He has planned for you along the way.

  1. So very true. Awesome thought. I often look at the sky and marvel at the beauty – but now, I will look at in in “dual” thought and think – that is me too, let me shine it out. Thanks for these precious thoughts!

  3. Thank you Yvonne – you already do!

  4. Dankie Estelle. Ek hou so baie van jou diep gedagtes en woorde – dit inspireer my om self ook dieper te gaan.
