No Room for Him Here

by Joan Campbell

No room for Him here

Amongst the overflowing crowd

The Inn so full, so busy, so loud.

Platters of food and goblets of wine

At benches and tables guests revel and dine.

Jests and laughter carry into the night

Not a single eye perceives the great light.

Drowned are Angel voices from the lit-up hills

And a baby’s cry that a mother’s voice stills.

The wanderers know not of the Saviour born

And they leave unchanged the following morn.

No room for Him here

Amongst the overflowing crowd

The shops so full, so busy, so loud.

Platters of food and bottles of wine

At a laden Christmas table, that all call divine.

Music and laughter carry into the night

Merry mails and tweets are cheery and bright.

Drowned are soft whispers that this day is much more

That a far greater Guest stands and knocks at their door.

The wonderers return to lives empty and lost

Untouched by Heaven’s joy brought at such a high cost.
